What I’ve Learned as a Student Ambassador

This story was written by Maura Wyatt, a Department of Sociology and Anthropology Student Ambassador who is majoring in anthropology.

In my time at NC State, I have had the most wonderful experiences and opportunities to be involved with both the NC State community and the Raleigh community at large. As a Student Ambassador for the NC State’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology, I have been able to work alongside my amazing peers to help current and prospective students on their educational journey (whether that be choosing a major within our department or just learning how to be successful here at NC State).

Through our new Student Connections program, the other Student Ambassadors and myself are able to reach out to all the students in our department and create a sense of community (which has been especially important during this time due to COVID-19). Reaching out to our peers can look like a few emails every month to Zoom calls and text messages, and that’s what makes being a Student Ambassador great. Another great part about being in the program is that as a graduating senior (woot woot!) I have taken a ton of classes within both our department and the humanities at large, so having that resource as a younger student can be helpful when looking at classes to sign up for in upcoming semesters (for example our upcoming spring semester registration).

Being in college (and especially right now) can feel so overwhelming at times, so to just have some fellow students there with you giving you that reassurance can make all the difference. Even just for me as an Ambassador it has been extremely rewarding and helpful knowing that if I need anything at any time I have the incredible support and counsel of not only my fellow Ambassadors, but our fantastic leader Stephanie Jares, to lean back on and that’s the type of supportive network the Student Ambassador Program has, and continues, to instill in our department.
