Dr. April Fernandes to Present at the Denver Law Review’s Annual Symposium

"Debt & Financial Insecurity in the Modern Economy"

Associate Professor of Sociology, Dr. April Fernandes, has been invited to give a presentation at the Denver Law Review’s Annual Symposium, being held April 12-13. The annual event is hosted at the Sturm College of Law at the University of Denver. Dr. Fernandes’s talk is entitled, “Perpetual Debt & Prison Pay-to-Stay,” and she will serve on the Criminalization of Poverty Panel during the 2-day symposium.

“The Denver Law Review’s 2024 Symposium “Debt & Financial Insecurity in the Modern Economy” will apply a critical lens to the capitalist framework of our modern economy and the ways in which this framework influences individual’s relationship to housing, employment, the natural environment, and the criminal justice system.” A full schedule and details regarding the symposium can be found here. https://www.denverlawrev.org/symposium

Dr. Fernandes’s co-leads the Captive Money Lab, which is a collaborative research initiative surrounding pay-to-stay laws in the United States. “Captive Money Lab is a public-facing research lab spearheading the innovation of research, policy, and advocacy that concerns the political economy of punishment and the resulting impact on inequality in the United States.
