Alumna Sandra Harding (Ph.D., Sociology ’94) asks a deceptively simple question: “Is life in the Tropics getting better?” But don’t be fooled by the simplicity of that question: her quest for the answer, and her leadership as an economic sociologist, stand to change the world. Harding, vice chancellor and president of Australia’s James Cook University, chairs the State of the Tropics, a first-of-its-kind partnership with 12 research institutions around the globe.

In Ancient Artifacts, A Newfound Passion

First generation student Jordan Karlis (History and Anthropology) traveled to Jordan to participate in an archaeological dig in 2012. She was hooked on the research and returned to Amman to present her findings at an international conference. Students in an advanced digital video class made this video to explain Jordan's research and to share her transformation from shy student to engaged scholar.

A Circus Life

As a CHASS student in the 1970s, Bill Allen says his professors inspired him to travel the world trying to solve ecological problems. His wanderlust eventually turned to circus love. Allen is the executive director and producer for Cirque de la Symphonie, a performance company he co-founded in 2005 that blends the European circus tradition with symphony performances.

September 2013 Student of the Month

Jaquelinne Murillo is a senior International Studies major. She has studied abroad in Argentina and interned at the Mexican Consulate in Raleigh. She is active on campus, including participation in Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Hispanic/Latino Symposium, and Mi Familia. Jaquelinne is a Chancellor's Leadership Scholarship recipient and intends to pursue a career in law.
